Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine's "natural" or unpaid ("organic") search results.
Most of our customers will be looking to drive traffic to their websites in order to maximise exposure and ultimately to generate sales. It is best if website visitors arrive organically, not via a Google AdWords link as that would incur costs.
There are many companies that will advertise the fact that they can get your website onto the first page of Google, or any other search engine for that matter. But the important thing is, for what search term?
Be sensible with your keywords
Some search terms will have massive popularity, for example if you type "supermarket" into Google the first page of results would probably contain definitions of the word "supermarket" and the links to the home pages of the top UK supermarkets. However, if you add additional terms, to identify the country, or even place you are interested in, you should have more success at finding the correct result. This does of course dilute the search results, but you will achieve a more successful outcome by doing this.
How do you get listed by search engines?
When you create a new website, if you want the search engines to know about it you have to tell them. This is best done using an XML Sitemap, which we can create and submit for you. The search engines once they know about your domain name will start sending web robots to "spider" the contents of the site. This involves the search engine extracting the page title, meta tag contents and some of the page contents in order to get the site listed in search engine results. You will have more success at achieving a reasonable page ranking if your site includes meta tags on each page.
Finally, beware of companies offering to list you on a full range of search engines. Mass-submission to the search engines usually results in a negative effect.
